![]() ![]() All other storytelling is simply done through conversations, and that allows the player to really get to know Zagreus and the rest of the characters so much more, and makes certain character arcs that much more impactful. There is a narrator, but he is actually used sparingly and mostly as a “voice” for characters who can’t actually speak (like a certain three-headed canine). But what really stands out is how organically the storytelling is. It’s become sort of a trademark of Supergiant to have some of the best writers in the business, and this is no exception. No real surprise here, but the writing in this game is second to none.I was playing on a high end console, but from what I’ve heard even the Switch version runs without a hitch, which is fairly impressive. The gameplay is buttery smooth and remains so throughout the game, even with the screen full of dozens of particle effects, enemies, and projectiles. The action is the backbone of the game, and the developers really made sure it was something special. Temporary buffs, power tradeoffs…the list goes on. Unlockable weapon upgrades that can completely change weapon behavior. Nine Olympic gods with dozens of powers between them. Six different weapons with four different styles each. I can’t overstate this enough, the variety is astounding. That goal is met in Hades by the sheer amount of combat combinations you can wield. When you have a game of this type where repetition is baked into the genre itself, replayability becomes much more of an important goal than in a normal single-player game. Hades is a remarkable action game, and really feels like an evolutionary step forward from Bastion, the very first game from the Supergiant team. What makes it a roguelite, however, is the various currencies that you find during your attempts that you get to keep after death and can be spent on various permanent and unlockable upgrades to make each subsequent attempt a little easier. Like all roguelike games, each journey through the layers of the underworld are unique, with rooms and rewards rearranging themselves randomly each time, healing is rare and limited, and death returns the player to the beginning, with any of the room rewards and upgrades being lost. Aid in his attempts comes in the form of various weapons, his allies and friends in the underworld, and the Olympic gods of classic mythology themselves, who lend their powers to the player. Zagreus is trying to escape the underworld ruled by his father, the namesake Hades, and reach the surface, for reasons that become more clear as the game progresses. Hades is a roguelite (lite, not like) in which you play as Zagreus, an obscure Greek chthonic (underworld) god whose existence is somewhat debatable among historians, which makes him ripe for reinvention as a protagonist in a game. I played the game for around 82 hours, had over a hundred runs, and did almost everything in the game except for all the cosmetic interior decorating stuff. Any spoilers will be minor only and marked. In this review we will be looking at the good, the not-so-good, and whether or not I recommend you and yours play the game. Today I am reviewing Hades from Supergiant Games! The game was originally released in 2020 for PC and Switch but I played the Xbox Series X version that was released in August of last year. I can’t promise any steady schedule or anything, and will just be posting reviews of games as I finish them. I love this sub and figured I would get back into the swing of reviewing as I work through my backlog of games from the past several years and share some of my experiences as a dad who shares his love of gaming with his kids. Hello PatientGamers! I am a 35-year-old former small time game reviewer who now has two young children and not as much time or budget for new releases.
